In today’s hectic and constantly connected world, it can feel like there is no escape from the need to produce or be productive. While working efficiently is essential, that doesn’t mean you need to stay connected twenty-four-seven hours a day. Doing so is likely harmful to your health as you are not giving yourself the time or space to reset and recharge your soul. That’s why it’s so important to unplug every once in a while and take the time to focus on yourself.

Here are six ways to do just that:

Designate Screen-Free Hours, Days, or Weeks

Commit to taking regular breaks from screens, be it a few hours, days, or even weeks. It may be hard at first, but you can do it by slowly transitioning away from your phone and other screens. For example, try turning off all your devices at least an hour before bedtime and an hour when you wake up in the morning.

Set Up “No Phone” Zones

Identify specific spaces in your house or times of the day where you will not take out or use your phone, such as during meals, before bedtime, or in the reading or activity room. This helps you practice mindful living and staying present in the moment.

Limit Social Media or Television Usage

Make a conscious effort to limit your usage of social media or television. Set daily boundaries around how much time you spend scrolling through social media or watching tv. For example, allocate no more than fifteen minutes per day browsing apps like Instagram or other sources of entertainment and let it be the final touch to your day after participating in activities that bring joy and relaxation. This reduces “FOMO,” or the fear of missing out, allowing more room for self-care practices.

Find New Hobbies

Try exploring new and interesting hobbies that help you relax and take your mind off work or anything else. It could be something physical such as yoga, running, or dancing; creative, like painting, drawing or crafting; intellectual such as playing chess or reading books; and so on. However, don’t be encouraged to use the internet to figure it out, as this will defeat the purpose of unplugging.

Read a New Book

Reading is a great way to unplug from the world and get lost in the stories of different characters. It also helps you gain knowledge, open your mind to new ideas, and expand your horizons. Plus, it’s an enjoyable activity that will undoubtedly bring peace to your soul that you can control by finding the stories you want to read.

Get Outside

Vitamin D is healthy for your soul and overall health. Spend time outdoors in nature or your local park, bike ride, walk, swim, or garden. Do whatever you find enjoyable in the great outdoors and enjoy the beauty of the world around you.

Regular breaks from screens and everyday life benefit your mental and physical health. It helps remind you of what is essential, enables you to gain perspective, and makes time for what brings joy to your life. By making unplugging part of your regular routine, you ensure you have enough time and energy to take care of yourself and recharge your soul.
